Project information
The project is a new modern ski cabin design for a ski area located near the Viti crater in Mývatn, Iceland. We started from the basic idea of a sheltered, aesthetic, modern and environmentally harmonious, yet symbolic, structure that would fulfill the necessary needs of the area.
The building is located in the north-west direction to support the chairlift and the visitor axis without damaging it. The building was created by elevating an area of approximately 300 m2. For the functions of the observation terrace and snow groomer, the roof was pulled on the north-west axis to form a cover. This form was smoothed and finalized by considering aesthetic concerns and snow load. For this form, a system consisting of steel structure was installed and placed on concrete foundations at the points where it touches the ground and made structure. Transparent areas were created with glass material in some parts of the cover. Natural light is provided to the mass.
The form of the building resembles a skier skiing with its dynamism.
With the white panels and glass used in the form, it is conceived in such a way that it will be disappear in the snow on the terrain and the general lines of the form will be noticed when approaching the building from the highway and will be better grasped as it gets closer. With the form, there will be no snow load on it and melting snow will be collected by the drainage systems in the building and can be used in the toilets.
Finally, the name of our concept is The Flow, inspired by the dynamic and fast flow of people skiing.
