Project information
This residence, located in Cologne, Germany, features a spacious and open interior layout within a 390 m² footprint. The program includes a generous living room, two bedrooms, a kitchen, a storage area, and two bathrooms—all arranged to support both functionality and comfort in everyday life.
Architectural Form & Spatial Flow
The defining element of the design is a continuous hip roof that wraps around the entire structure. Rather than being a separate formal element, the roof is conceived as an architectural gesture that embraces the building—a unifying volume that lends both identity and protection.
Natural light is introduced through large openings along the front and sides, allowing sunlight to filter into the main living areas and creating a bright, uplifting atmosphere throughout the day.
Indoor-Outdoor Relationship
Surrounding the building is a generously proportioned terrace, offering a seamless connection between indoor living and the outdoor environment. The design emphasizes this relationship most clearly in the direct link between the living room and the widest point of the terrace, allowing for an extended living space during warmer months and outdoor gatherings.
Materiality & Expression
The hip roof structure is clad entirely in wooden panels, adding warmth and a strong tactile quality to the building’s exterior. This consistent material usage helps the roof function not just as shelter, but also as a visual framework that integrates the house into its context.
The natural tones and textures of the wood soften the building’s geometry, offering a modern yet grounded appearance that resonates with both the built and natural surroundings.
